MANACLE (noun).
1. A shackle for the hand; handcuff.
2. Usually, manacles. restraints; checks.
MANACLE (verb).
1. To handcuff; fetter.
2. To hamper; restrain.
The stunning veteran model and women’s rights activist advised the young girls in the audience that they shouldn’t let other people’s opinions and comments manacle their confidence and individuality.
DENIGRATE (verb).
1. To speak damagingly of; criticize in a derogatory manner; sully; defame: to denigrate someone’s character.
2. To treat or represent as lacking in value or importance; belittle; disparage: to denigrate someone’s contributions to a project.
3. To make black; blacken: rain clouds denigrating the sky.
His very own self-denigration was so evident in his writing that it made people look down on him and his country of origin.
DURESS (noun).
1. Compulsion by threat or force; coercion; constraint.
2. Law. such constraint or coercion as will render void a contract or other legal act entered or performed under its influence.
3. Forcible restraint, esp. imprisonment.
Her radiant smile and confident stance did not show any signs that she was experiencing a lot of duress.
EXTENUATE (verb).
1. To lessen or attempt to lessen the magnitude or seriousness of, especially by providing partial excuses. (Syn: Archaic)
2. To make thin or emaciated; To reduce the strength of. (Syn: Obsolete)
3. To belittle; disparage.
The government tried to extenuate the situation by releasing a barrage of public service announcements and press releases, but the courageous journalists made sure that every bit of the issue was exposed.
PRODIGIOUS (adjective).
1. Extraordinary in size, amount, extent, degree, force, etc.
2. Wonderful or marvelous
3. Abnormal; monstrous. 4. Obsolete. ominous.
His first solo pottery exhibit, which captured and fascinated a huge audience, proved that his talent was indeed prodigious.
PORTMANTEAU (noun).
1. A new word formed by joining two others and combining their meanings; “’smog’ is a blend of ’smoke’ and ‘fog’”; “‘motel’ is a portmanteau word made by combining ‘motor’ and ‘hotel’”; “‘brunch’ is a well-known portmanteau” [syn: blend]
2. A large travelling bag made of stiff leather.
Perplexigirl is a portmanteau that I invented myself!
CYNOSURE (noun).
1. The northern constellation Ursa Minor; also : North Star.
2. One that serves to direct or guide.
3. A center of attraction or attention
The Obamas are sure to be a cynosure everywhere they go, not just in the United States, but all around the world. The paparazzi is the least of their worries!
